I really don't think this should be a merge article

Anyone I deleted this sentence. Someone can add it back with NPOV.

The distinction between authoritarianism and totalitarianism is slight, however authoritarian leaderships are generally thought of as being slightly more benevolent, and much less oppressive.

My own sense (having known people who lived through both) is that there is a *BIG* difference between authoritarian and totalitarian regimes. Basically in an authoritarian one you can lead a normal life whereas in a totalitarian one you can't.
