Untitled[edit]

I know, I know, the Robinson picture is hideous. I've a better one somewhere that I myself took when she was formally resigning so I'll try to dig it out. STÓD/ÉÍRE 08:44 Mar 15, 2003 (UTC)

I've changed returned back to elected. Every president is elected irrespective of whether an election takes place. If only one candidate is nominated, he is deemed "elected" by the Returning Officer without the need for a full vote in an election. FearÉIREANN 21:58, 4 Oct 2003 (UTC)

deletion[edit]

I have deleted the sentence stating that no president had ever refused a dissolution of the dail since Mary Robinson refused such a request in 1995 when the Fianna Fail/Labour government collpased. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.38.149.13 (talk) 01:25, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion has been reverted. If it's true that Mary Robinson subsequently refused a dissolution, might I suggest that (No Irish president to date has ever refused one.) is ambiguous and offer (No Irish president had previously refused one.)? -- Arwel (talk) 07:34, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sex Scandal[edit]

I must say this is the first I've heard of any such thing. To defuse my scepticism, I'd like to see some references, especially from der spiegal, or else it's getting deleted. The style of writing is tabloid and tongue-in-cheek it appears. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.60.98.133 (talk) 15:49, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Secondly, there already is a reference to it, if you'd bothered to read the article properly, you would have seen it. It's from RTE and here it is again: [1]. Thirdly, I quite like the style! Fourthly, as a properly referenced item of fact, it stays! Snappy56 (talk) 10:58, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Name in Irish, references[edit]

I've added in the Irish version of his name, but that's messed up the references (with the first one now being numbered 3). I'm not sure how to fix it, so it would be great if someone else could adjust them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.44.110.91 (talk) 11:31, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Country of birth[edit]

This article state country of birth as Republic of Ireland/Ireland but in 1923 it was the Irish Free State, this needs changing. C. 22468 (talk) 16:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's geographic place of birth, so its just Ireland. Snappy (talk) 18:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth[edit]

Either he was born in Spanish Point, or he was born in Hillery's pub in Miltown Malbay (as per the photo caption). Not both. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.254.251.33 (talk) 13:26, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Country of birth[edit]

Patrick Hillery was born in 1923 and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Ireland-related articles states "For people born before independence in 1922, describe their birthplace as simply Ireland (not Ireland). Similarly, for people born before 3 May 1921 in what today is Northern Ireland say Ireland, not Northern Ireland or Ireland, and do not describe them as Northern Irish." so therefore is should link to Irish Free State not Ireland as that was the state at the time. C. 22468 (talk) 20:55, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how you reached that conclusion from IMOS. The standard interpretation is to use the island to avoid unnecessary political complications, but perhaps it should be clarified at IMOS. Snappy (talk) 21:43, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A good compromise I have seen in to use Spanish Point, County Clare, Ireland where there is no link the Ireland part but yes clarification is needed on it. C. 22468 (talk) 22:27, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
