Global perspective needed; Different senses of "allowance"[edit]

$5 is not the right size allowance in all places or cultures.

There should be a disambiguation page for allowance to include engineering allowance (related to dimensioning and tolerancing). This is defined as the minimum stated clearance or the maximum stated interference for mating mechanical parts. Germaldish 17:04, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When someone gets around to writing the article about monetary allowance, I hope something will be included explaining how the law relates to minors (who are basically non-citizens or second-class citizens) owning posessions, even when the money that bought it was "theirs" but given to them by their parents.. in some cases, parents of even 17-year-olds have simply confiscated all the progeny's property... if it can be called property.

Historical Meaning[edit]

I frequently read something like "their allowance of £250 allowed them live comfortably" in Wikipedia articles about historical people (e.g. see the article about Oscar Wilde). So what does it really mean? Did they receive £250 per year? Per Month? Who paid the money? Could this income be inherited?
