Does anyone have neat idea about naming of old provinces?[edit]

I am going to put a suffix province to all of names to avoid ambiguation problem. Any though? -- Taku 23:22, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

The Japanese kanji should definitely be included, and rough correspondances to present-day prefectures would also be nice. --Jpatokal 12 Nov 2003

kuni(国 or 令制国) and han(藩) are two different things.[edit]

This article is confuse Province with han. Province was established in Nara period or late Asuka period, and carried through to the Meiji era.--井中 康太朗 (talk) 04:04, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A map would be nice...[edit]

Perhaps we could get these names attached to some sort of map... anyone?

It would be helpful to have the old names, and the new names on the map, or maybe color coded? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.165.22.16 (talk) 23:45, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The circuits[edit]

Were the circuits an administrative level?

"Circuits" doesn't mean anything. It should be erased. It doesn't have any judicial implications. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.2.135.38 (talk) 10:19, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Map Link[edit]

The page links to my page http://www.maproom.org/maps/books/japan/murdoch/, which is obsolete and possibly broken. I hope someone will substitute the current URL http://www.maproom.org/00/05/index.php Maproom 17:00, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Fixed. Wouldn't editing the article have required slightly less effort than editing the talk page? Willhsmit 23:46, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Of course it would. But my understanding is that wikipedia forbids one to make links to one's own pages, the judgment of an unbiassed person like yourself is required. Anyway, thank you. Maproom 15:01, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The provinces' subdivisions[edit]

Were the prefectures at the time before the Meiji Restoration the fiefdoms or han with about 300? If so, are there any references of those subdivisions? jlog3000 (talk) 12:32, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Provinces were divided into districts, as today's prefectures are (in fact, in most cases, the districts were the same before and after the establishment of the prefectures, though some districts were changed). The prefectures were created by the Meiji government, and had no existence before then. Nik42 (talk) 22:15, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
