Demographics[edit]

User:152.163.100.65 is deluded in believing that there are no blacks residing in the Bridgeport Community Area of Chicago. The facts are in the census data. U.S. Census data for the year 2000 (including racial breakdowns) for Bridgeport can be found at the following sources:

Not wading into the black discussion, but I removed "(besides the Lebanese)" from "Although the Irish are Bridgeport's oldest and most famous ethnic group (besides the Lebanese)". May I also take the opportunity to wish all hipsters a painful and prolonged death. Community area or neighborhood in lede[edit]

Like some other districts in Chicago, Bridgeport can be defined as either a neighborhood or a community area. In my mind, neighborhood is the more apt way to define Bridgeport, since the article is about Bridgeport as a place that people inhabit physically and socially, rather than Bridgeport as a defined unit for long term social research. Non-Chicagoans likely have no idea what a community area is, which makes the lede confusing for most readers. Even for Chicagoans, in my experience, very few think about CAs on a daily basis, and they're mostly used in maps that track some social indicator. The neighborhood, on the other hand, is a constantly used geographical marker. Using the community area in the lede also falsly implies that the neighborhood's boundaries are fixed, when neighborhoods have fuzzy boundaries that change over time. It is both a neighborhood, and one of the cities official 77 community areas, and one of the community areas that is mainly occupied by the neighborhood itself. Both are mentioned in the lead as well as the article and the map in the box (as is the case for all 77 articles regarding Chicago's the community areas) shows the area. I live in Bridgeport and I'm not confused... although our 9th District police station is called Deering, and Deering is the name of an area nowhere near here. This is part of a larger scope in WP Chicago so please understand. Bridgeport or RJD?[edit]

The subject of this article is Bridgeport. "Richard J. Daley is..." The subject of this sentence is Richard J. Daley. This sentence is off-topic, and more appropriate for the RJD article. Also, the political history section of the article does not distinguish between Bridgeport and the 11th ward; they are not the same. Hugh (talk) 21:16, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're correct, it is about Bridgeport, but this is in the subsection about politicians from Bridgeport (our greatest export), and the Daley family just happens to be the neighborhood's most famous native family... and regarding the Irish base, until the area transitioned to being more Chinese than anything else, it was a heavily Irish neighborhood and the Old Man was heavily connected to the 'Irish Social Club' here, which became his power base and springboard into City Hall. Boundaries with Armour Square?[edit]

The Armour Square, Chicago article gives that neighborhood's southern and eastern boundaries as Pershing Road and the Dan Ryan, respectively, and indicates that it is bordered by Bridgeport to the east. This article indicates that Bridgeport's southern and eastern boundaries are Pershing Road and the Dan Ryan, respectively, and that Bridgeport is bordered by Armour Square to the west. Something is not quite right here... Might this be an aspect of the neighborhood vs. "community area" problem? My impression as a non-local is that the Dan Ryan is the boundary between the Bridgeport and Bronzeville, and that Armour Square (qua neighborhood) is just the part of Bridgeport around Armour Square Park; but I'm not sure I could find a citable authority for that. -- Visviva (talk) 16:58, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More than anything, it is likely a lack of attention to detail and/or someone who doesn't edit both articles... or someone who wouldn't know Bridgeport from Bridgeview (my hunch is the latter). Armour Square, as a community area, begins at the tracks/viaduct next to Stewart. Bridgeport and Armour Square get lumped together all the time. There are spillover neighborhoods that traverse 'Community Area' boundaries, but in the case where there is a major railway cutting or interstate cutting through areas it does kinda divide the neighborhoods cleanly as well as the community area. Realted from Armour Square: The Armour article declares that Armour Square is "technically" in Bridgeport. If we want to treat these primarily as neighborhoods rather than as the more precisely defined community areas, do we have some source to point to over where these neighborhoods are? ~E$ (talk) 21:06, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed the problem. No idea when that BS was added, but I've removed the 'technically located in Bridgeport' as it's not technically located in Bridgeport. I live in Bridgeport, and while I realize that is not a citeable reference, I'll stand by that statement in the knowledege that there isn't any substantiated reference anywhere that will say that it is. Armour Square is a defined 'community area' and a neighborhood. The neighborhood being the smaller of the two (as the majority of the residential part of 'community area' is taken up by Chinatown).Ryecatcher773 (talk) 23:17, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
