End of Archons[edit]

It would be nice if the article gave some idea of why Archons went away. It ends with the last Archon, and no explanation of what happened afterwards.

Comments[edit]

It is not actually stated what an archon is, which makes the whole article pretty much useless.

Good point...I added some background info. How is it now? Adam Bishop 19:30, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I changed the link for anarchy in the background section to actually go to anarchy rather than to the article for anomie Twfowler 15:56, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nonsense[edit]

"The historicity of any of this ancient list may be reasonably doubted by the layman and capable of different interpretations, but where there may be no doubt as to historical documents." huh? That does not English! Is something missing? Also what is the source for this list? Furius (talk) 06:04, 17 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

athenian tyranny redirects[edit]

Athenian tyranny currently redirects here. It seems more suitable to have it redirect to the page on peisistratos Snevet888 (talk) 21:29, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Archon 350/49: an error?[edit]

Currently the list gives Apollodorus of Acharnae as the archon for the year 350/49. I suspect this is an error, though I don't have access to Samuel's Greek and Roman Chronology to check. If someone does have a copy, it'd be great if you could check to make sure this is right.

Christopher Carey, writing about the family of Pasion, specifically says "Apollodoros could not have become archon".[1] J.K. Davies' section on the family of Pasion in Athenian Propertied Families doesn't mention an archonship at all, though it does go into detail about all the trierarchies Apollodoros perfomed. John Buckler, reviewing Trevett's biography of Apollodoros, says that he had "an undistinguished political career",[2] and mentions him serving on the Boule (I don't have Trevett's biography to hand to check whether he discusses it, though). Kapparis (1999) doesn't mention his being archon, though discusses his trierarchies. Hamel (2003) discusses his trierarchies and mentions his role as choregos, but is equally silent on the issue.

I can't find any evidence that anyone reliable on Apollodoros has ever proposed that he was archon, so I wonder whether a different Apollodoros (there were a few, at least one of whom was prominent in Athens around the right time) is meant here... Investigating this, I find that our versions of this article in Greek and French both give simply "Apollodoros" for the archon this year (the Greek citing Diodorus 16.46). The English version of the article also simply had "Apollodorus" until this edit in March; no rationale is given for making this change in the edit summary, but I infer from the fact that the same editor was doing this at the same time that they had seen the claim in that article and brought it over here. Unfortunately, the claim there has never been well-sourced. The original revision of that page contained the claim, and based it off of Diodorus; Diodorus does not however specify which Apollodoros was archon, and since it's such a common name inferring that therefore it must be Apollodoros son of Paison is WP:OR (and probably wrong at that!) Therefore, I am confident that the identification here is made in error and am reverting that line to simply "Apollodorus".
I am the editor who made that change, and you inferred correctly. Thanks for clearing this up! Best, Constantine 06:50, 2 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
