Untitled[edit]

I tried to put this into complete sentences, and failed miserably. Who is this guy? Why is he important? Who cares about him? Tuf-Kat

@Tuf-Kat this guy is the father of the Roman Emperor Elagabalus, how is he not important? WeWuzPhoenicians (talk) 01:05, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NEW POST:

The writer of this article was sloppy. It says that SVM, its subject, dedicated of an inscription to Bel in Vasio, Galia, and cites a reference to a book on Bel:

<Marcellus was known in dedicating an inscription to Bel in Vasio (Vaison) in Gaul.[11] The bilingual inscription which is in Greek and Latin on an altar, dedicated by him is honoring Bel in remembrance of the oracles given to him in Apamea.[11]>

But when one actually looks up the reference, one finds (p 307) that it has cited the wrong page (306), although the right paragraph, and that its text ROUNDLY contradicts the assertion, now no longer accepted, that this refers to SVM.

< Finally Bel of Apamea is also found in Vasio (Vaison), located in the south of Gallia, in a bilingual Greek-Latin inscription on an altar. The text says that the altar was dedicated by someone called Sextus in honour of Bel to remember the oracles given to him in Apamea. Originally this Sextus was identified with Sextus Varius Marcellus from Apamea, the father of the later Emperor Elagabal. This explanation is not accepted any more because a first name is not sufficient for this identification (BAL TY, 1981: 8-10). >

This is yet another example of the RANK carelessness attending most of what is written on any subject relating to "Elagabalus".

More useful would have been to cite under relevant epigraphy the fistula naming SVM as procurator of the aqueducts:

And the Acta of the Secular Games naming Julia Soaemias Bassiana (ISB) as his wife.
