Untitled[edit]

Anyone know what is the deal w/ this guy and those hats he always wears? He's been rocking that look for a long time.

Older pictures like the one on the "Live in Tokyo" Album show him to be almost bald. I guess he wore those hats to hide it.

Was Joe Zawinul born as "Josef Erich" or "Josef Erich Zawinul"? Erich sounds like a first/middle name. -Joshk 09:54, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

such as Bob Moog's minimoog Zawinul never used the Moog synthesisers - he didnt like them, as they didnt give a very flexible sound. I remember reading this in an interview, but i've forgotten where. FWIW the interview with SOS (http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun03/articles/joezawinul.asp) goes over his equipment in a lot of detail and Moogs are never mentioned.

I have to say the secondary article (with the misspelt Zawinal) sounds more like opinion than fact. The phrase 'A fact which seems to elude the majority of the listening public' for example - surely whether the guy is as good as the weathe report firstly subjective, and secondly for the listening public to decide for itself. I would say that though, I'm a Jaco fan.

Hancock and Minimoog?[edit]

The wikipedia article says unlike Hancock, Zawinul didn't care for the minimoog. While it's true that Zawinul didn't go for the Moog, actually Hancock didn't either, as far as I know. He used the Arp Odyssey (a stripped down synth compared to the 2600, more on a par with the functionality of the Minimoog) on the album Headhunters. Corea on the other hand definitely used the Minimoog. My guess is that he transitioned over from the Odyssey in the mid 70's. There' a 1974 clip of him with RTF where his keyboard stack is on Odyssey sitting on top of his Rhodes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZiq4fY8uew). Other videos show a bigger rig with 2 keyboards stacks in an L configuration. They show the mini on top of his Rhodes, and he seems to be doing most of his soloing on it. Biggest commercial success?[edit]

The article states that Zawinul's biggest commercial success came with "Birdland". But "Birdland" was not a pop Top 40 hit, while "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" not only hit #11 for Cannonball Adderly, but the cover version by the Buckinghams hit #5 later that year. So I would think "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" would be his biggest commercial success. --Metropolitan90 05:49, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weather Report was emphatically mot a singles band. The album Heavy Weather has to count as his point of widest commercial impact. Besides, Weather Report are one of the chief bands that founded the very idea of "world music" even if I guess Zawinul would disavow the overuse and cliche of that term. 11 Sep 2007[edit]

The German page has already reported him dead, but I can't find any news about that, and I'm not going to add anything until the news is confirmed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.99.200.51 (talk) 07:04, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am afraid the news is true. Another legend gone Paul210 07:18, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed hearsay...[edit]

While few people have more respect for Zawinul than me, there are some things up with which I will not put and so have removed the following until someone can come up with reliable references:

Josef was already so proficient that his teacher at Berklee is said to have stated, "There is nothing you can learn here. Go out and start playing professionally." Berklee school legend has it that Zawinul was the only entering Berklee student to have ever scored 110% on the entrance exam, surpassing even his achievement of receiving the only perfect score ever attained by also correcting several mistakes on the test.

I could have put fact tags in there instead of removing the paragraph but it would have needed at least three and they'd've made the article look too ugly... --Technopat (talk) 17:45, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hommage[edit]

Recentrly, cuban pianist Chucho Valdés made an hommage track to Zawinul in his recent album "Chucho Valdes & The Afrocuban Messengers, Chucho´s steps" named Ziwinul´s mambo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.98.137.6 (talk) 17:56, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sideman in Weather Report[edit]

The Weather Report albums are listed under "sideman". This is absurd. Formally he was co-leader, and practically the main force in Weather Report. Nahabedere (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:50, 8 January 2012 (UTC).[reply]

External links is not a parking lot for sources. They belong here, on talk pages until they are used up.[edit]

These sources do not ever belong in External links. I have moved the link farm from there to this talk page where they do belong. Warning: I didn't check them over, so be careful in choosing any references here. Thank you! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 07:48, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Evading the Holocaust[edit]

Zawinul was a quarter Gypsy and lived in Vienna during its rule by the Hitler regime. What likely saved him from a death camp was the location of the records to confirm such ancestry in Hungary. Heff01 (talk) 19:14, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

True, he was also separated from his parents by the hardships of the war. The moving track "The Orphan" on 8:30 and its chorus "No more, no more" is a half-veiled reflection on those tough years. 192.121.232.253 (talk) 12:36, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

To add to article[edit]

To add to this article: mention of the documentary film Joe Zawinul, A Musical Portrait (dir. Mark Kidel). 173.88.246.138 (talk) 04:45, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

In the lead, we state that his name is pronounced "/ˈzɒvɪnəl/ ZOV-in-əl". We then quote the source for this as stating "pronounced zav-in-ul". 'zav' is not the same as 'zov'. /əl/ might not be the same as 'ul'. I don't think that ˈzɒvɪnəl or ZOV-in-əl is accurate, based on the source (which I haven't accessed) or pronunciations that I've heard. What should the pronunciation be?
