Parameters for HDI and GDP[edit]

The parameters for HDI and GDP do not show on the state pages. This needs to be fixed. 021120x (talk) 12:10, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are no such parameters in the template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:14, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe this is where I mention that on the Virginia article, I switched the infobox to Template:Infobox political division, which does actually have parameters for HDI and GDP. It doesn't provide fields for Median Household Income or Largest Metro, but I wanted to give it a try. Because Template:Infobox U.S. state is a wrapper for Template:Infobox settlement however, it would be straightforward to add their "population_blank1" field here, which interested editors could use for something like GDP or HDI.-- Patrick Neil, oѺ/Talk 14:29, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Are there any difficulties with adding these parameters? Still nothing for HDI or GDP in the infobox template. -- 021120x (talk) 21:32, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have no objections to adding these two parameters since they are both relevant and have good sources. If @Jonesey95 doesn't object I would be happy to implement it as well. --Trialpears (talk) 16:49, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No objection. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:53, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So can we move forward with adding these parameters? Canada, Australia, and the UK have used them for quite some time. Don't understand the inertia for the US template. 021120x (talk) 21:31, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can I also put in a word for Gini index? Those other templates also offer that one for measuring inequality.-- Patrick Neil, oѺ/Talk 21:34, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am in favor of also adding a Gini parameter. 021120x (talk) 12:52, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There should be templates for GDP, GDP per capita and HDI. I am strongly in favour, and they should be added instantly. Can someone help to add it?--Afus199620 (talk) 19:06, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Largest county[edit]

@Jhenderson777: is this really a useful parameter? I don't think a state's largest (presumably most populous) county is really infobox-worthy. It's just a bit of fun trivia. Elli (talk | contribs) 05:29, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I welcome more thoughts. Maybe it isn’t. I find it optional at best. Shrug Jhenderson 777 05:31, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But I do find it as equally useful as the statistical area one in my own personal opinion. Jhenderson 777 05:33, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely when you put into consideration that’s how the metropolitan area borders are determined by census. Jhenderson 777 05:39, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a fantastic idea and I absolutely love it. Thank you, Jhenderson777. Best, Castncoot (talk) 02:17, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've been running into some consternation over this parameter like here. Perhaps if the same and nearby template labels said "Most populous" rather than "Largest"? The average reader may sometimes confuse "Largest" referring to land area rather than population. Stefen Towers among the rest! GabGruntwerk 18:36, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2010Pop?[edit]

It looks like the parameter "2010Pop" is now being used for the 2020 population. That's absurd, can anyone fix this? —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 02:58, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When reporting an issue, always link to an example page where you are observing the issue. I just looked at Delaware, and it looks OK to me. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:09, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonesey95 I see this on some states such as Alabama, Alaska, and Arkansas. They use "2010Pop" but use the parameter "population_as_of" to set a different date. The infobox at Delaware doesn't make sense either, because it uses the parameter "2020Pop" for the population in 2022. —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 01:20, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The parameters |2000Pop=, |2010Pop=, and |2020Pop= are aliases of one another, so the templates appear to be rendered just fine in all cases. Someone familiar with this template's history or willing to dive into this talk page's archives may be able to point to a reason for this. We should probably just have a parameter called |population= and use that. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:06, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the parameter should just be called population. This causes confusion for editors, and potentially for readers. —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 00:54, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maps[edit]

I know this infobox is relatively old, but I think we need to revise the map(s) displays. While the 'location in the United States' map is good for readers in high level info, it is really bad at actually illustrating the text, which is all about what's in the state. What can be done, or is there a way to add map2 already, or do something somewhat like the variations done at cities (see eg. New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago etc. infobox)? Coding Thoughts? Adding a "coordinates" field?[edit]

Greetings and felicitations. I see that the template has latitude and longitude fields for the appropriate ranges, but the template doesn't have a place to put the "Coord" template, nor do these talk pages have a record of a discussion of such a field. What do you think of adding such a field, in part so that mobile users can access the "Coord" template? —DocWatson42 (talk) 04:20, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This template was an exception to the big Wikipedia:Coordinates in infoboxes conversion project, because the parameters are not used for normal coordinates. States don't really have coordinates, since they are so large. See the documentation. Or maybe I misunderstand. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:05, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wondered/made the request because Maine had a Coord template at the bottom of the article. As a counter argument to "too large", Qinghai, a province of China, has a coord template, and it's slightly smaller than Texas. And I don't see anything in the documentation (as it currently stands) about coordinates. :-/ —DocWatson42 (talk) 14:47, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see:

Latitude: range of latitudes in the state, usually given in degrees and minutes from the southernmost to the northernmost parallel

example: |Latitude=25° 50′ N to 36° 30′ N

Longitude: range of longitudes in the state, usually given in degrees and minutes from the easternmost to the westernmost meridian

example: |Longitude=93° 31′ W to 106° 39′ W

in the current documentation. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:20, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pardon me—I was being literal and specific. (I did mention those in my initial post.) —DocWatson42 (talk) 03:42, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
