Katy Islamic Association[edit]

Removed this section because it is in the "Greater Katy" page and this article is about Katy in general not gossip. This page contains basic info on Katy not local stories that are currently in the news.--Moose321 16:26, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Roger Clemens never spent any part of his youth in Katy! He is from Dayton Ohio and lived in Sugarland and attended Dulles High School and then he transfered to Spring Wooods High school. Clemens lived in Katy for a short time early in his career. What is this "Katyite" stuff? Only people from katy proper are "katyites". I have lived in Katy since 1972, in the burbs off Mason, and we have never refered to ourselves as "Katyites". Believe me I can tell you some stories about Katy vs Katy area.

I added a little information about the Old Katy (Katy Proper) and New Katy dichotomy. Old Katy lies more or less north of I-10. The opposite is true of New Katy, which lies more or less south of I-10 (and includes the relatively new Cinco Ranch neighborhoods and the Ken Lay YMCA). I've lived here for 8 years (give or take a few months), and anyone who moves here will eventually hear about the difference between the two areas. I just thought I'd let the Wikipedians know about it as well. :) -AvestanHamster

You are ignorant. I personally live in Katy, Texas. The residents are quite liberal and condemn racism very quickly. I am often labeled as a racist against Muslims by non-Muslims even though one of my two closest friend is a Muslim. Do you want to know why? Because I wear boots and tuck my shirt in; like "dem der rednex an hilbilly folks". Liberals like you and many residents here are flat out ignorant. You base your opinion of the town on a episode of "The Daily Show". Can you say "naive". Katy is also a very educated town. for example at my High school 92% of the graduating seniors were accepted to college. Not to mention high standardized test scores (and my school is the a** end of the school district) (believe me... somebody can be ignorant and educated, if not then every intelligent person would be on the same side of everything).

Katy Islamic Association-Pig Races[edit]

Good Luck with trying to keep things unbiased...whenever racism is a topic you can really only trust a Libertarian, somebody who believe in both free opinion and free speech (not to imply that the ENITRE definition of a Libertarian), to remain unbiased.

Very confusing[edit]

On one hand it seems like the Article only lists items that are a part of the township itself then sees fit to list things that are not part of the township. Schools is a great example of this. Either list all schools or just the schools located within the city. This goes for universities and private schools and and other item that is not deemed within the city limits. Is this Article about katy or Greater Katy?[edit]

There seems to be a lot of information in regard to the Greater Katy area versus just the Katy Area. There is a post saying do not add cretain schools because they are not in Katy (but they are in Greater Katy) then it turns around and list business, hospitals and other items that are not in Katy but are in Greater Katy. So what is this article about? I would like to start doing an edit on it and either remove the non Katy items or merge katy and Greater katy together. I feel that both articles could be one article and would flow better. I will give it a couple of weeks and do more research on it. Greater Katy Article[edit]

Hello everyone. I am actually the original author of the Greater Katy article. Just some clarification:

--There is the City of Katy, and there is the Greater Katy region. The City of Katy is sometimes referred to as "Old Katy" which makes sense because the city limits is by far the oldest developed part of the entire region...the town was founded in 1895.

--Greater Katy started development in the 70s as Houston expanded westward. This area was and remains largely the domain of unincorporated Harris and Fort Bend counties. It is also almost entirely part of the Houston extraterritorial jurrisdiction (ETJ).

--Today the Greater Katy area is roughly along the same physical boundaries as the Katy Independent School District. The 2010 Census population for the Katy ISD is 256,979 (http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=DEC_10_PL_GCTPL2.ST52&prodType=table)

--The City of Katy cannot annex land in the Houston ETJ without express approval of the City of Houston. This involves a release of ETJ from Houston into the Katy ETJ, from which the City of Katy annexes the land. --The issues surrounding the expansion of the cities in the Houston area are governed by Chapters 42 and 43 of the Texas Local Government Code found at (http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/LG/htm/LG.43.htm). According to Scott Houston, General Council of the Texas Municipal League, in (http://www.tml.org/legal_pdf/ANNEXATION.pdf):

“The legislative outlook for annexation changed dramatically in the 1990s. In 1996, the City of Houston annexed an upscale subdivision called Kingwood, bringing in almost 50,000 new residents. At the time, Kingwood was a twenty-year-old subdivision that was fully built-out with large, expensive homes. When the developer first approached Houston for water and sewer extensions, the city and the developer agreed that when the City of Houston got closer to the subdivision, the subdivision would consent to annexation. It took Houston close to twenty years to get there. Upon the city’s arrival, the citizens of Kingwood organized and showed up literally in busloads at the Seventy Fifth Legislative Session in 1997 with banners that read ‘Free Kingwood.’ The protests of Kingwood residents and others ultimately resulted in the passage of Senate Bill 89 in 1999, the provisions of which are still being debated (and often litigated) over ten years later. S.B. 89 does not prohibit cities from annexing. The bill merely makes the process much more difficult, expensive, and time consuming in certain circumstances. However, the changes made by S.B. 89 do not have much significance for general law cities and home rule cities that annex smaller, sparsely occupied areas or annex only by petition. The greatest impact is on home rule cities that wish to exercise unilateral annexation authority to bring in large, existing residential subdivisions.”

I am interested in the future boundaries of the 34 cities that are wholly or partially located in Harris County because of my position there. The only authoritative data that I have access to are the currently published Extraterritorial Jurisdiction boundaries of the City of Houston. These imply that a negotiation of equals has occurred between it and smaller jurisdictions by the fact that they differ (in certain places) from a straight interpretation of the above legislation. I do not know where the record of any such deliberations is, or can be, maintained. Is it possible that the City of Houston is unilaterally imposing what is the "right" configuration of future area cities, rather than negotiating such things as equal partners? Geography[edit]

I have some photos of the monument located in a City of Katy "Thomas" tri-county park in Katy which appears to physically locate the point of intersection between Harris, Fort Bend and Waller Counties. I went there to try to measure its location relative to adjacent property lines for the Census Bureau's annual Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) process for Harris County. I'd like to add to the geography sub-article a short bit showing a picture of the boundary monument as it exists today. What do you think? --Paulsuckow (talk) 15:13, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Southland Conference Basketball[edit]

I'm sure someone can word this much better than me. The Southland Athletic Conference of the NCAA holds their annual men's and woman's basketball tournaments in the city at the Merrell Center.
