Sorry, David, you are absolutely right about the in-text link "air raid shelter". All I can say is that I did quite a bit of linking on 16 Feb. and somehow got beyond myself. Length[edit]

These shelters are not 12,000 feet (2.3 miles) long, they are more like 1,200-1,400 ft long. I think 12,000 ft has come from an incorrect transcription of part of the book "Rails through the clay" here. That number doesn't tally with what is given in the above document on that page (see http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/features/deep_level_shelters/photo3.html) nor with the information on Google Books for the same book. i had been working in the deeplevel shelters from 1963-to 1995 tillwe were made redundent.we maintained all seven of the shelters,with gangs of 3 men all shelters at this time were empty.most of the work was down to water and sewage seeping through the cast rings ,and concrete segments.the one inch bolts were another way that water seeped in ,out of the seven shelters the only one shelter we could not stop the seepage was clapham north,the main reason being the under ground river the ezera.as far as i know all but the north are used for storage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.190.36.168 (talk) 20:18, 27 November 2012 (UTC) Mott Hay and Anderson I presume.86.187.171.128 (talk) 15:59, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Background[edit]

The final sentence in the first paragraph includes: "... the Northern City Line opened in 1904, used a similar size of tunnel ..., although in fact main-line trains did not use it until 1976." Surely, the original owners of the line - the Great Northern & City Railway - would have used main-line stock? Why else would they have built the tunnels to main-line diameter with the additional cost involved? Indeed, the Metropolitan Railway who considered themselves to be a main-line railway and who bought the line in 1913 only had main-line sized rolling stock.Haynesta (talk)

References need to relate things in the article, rather just be added. Fandom is never good source to be honest. I have books here that I could add, but I'd need to write it and I don't have the time, really. Arrgh. Secretlondon (talk) 13:44, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Fandom site used to be Wikia, and London Wiki contains material not on WP (on the grounds of being OR and/or 'too minor' for WP).
