You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on Valerie Sutton, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an acceptable page. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item G11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this page is not blatant advertising, . Clicking that button will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. You are welcome to edit the page to fix this problem, but please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. As well as removing promotional phrasing, it helps to add factual encyclopaedic information to the page, and add citations from independent reliable sources to ensure that the page will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. NewJerseyLiz Let's Talk 13:59, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Hi, thanks for message. I deleted your article because

  • it did not provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that it meets the notability guidelines. It is now Wikipedia policy that biographical articles about living people must have independent verifiable references, or they will be deleted. The only sources were closely associated with her, and, even so, two of three referenced her family and where she has lived, hardly a claim for notability.
  • it was written in a promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic. Examples of claims lacking independent sources but presented as fact include: Over the next two years she applied her system to recording the historic ballet steps ... which were in danger of being forgotten... as Sutton improved her system... by special invitation... came to the attention of sign language researchers... they asked for a demonstration... it has been used for writing not only... Sutton has continually worked to improve her notation systems and now leads... It's basically a fan page, not an encyclopaedia article.
  • What I do not see is any independent commentary or criticism of her system, any indication of what makes it notableโ€”as it reads, we have no independent (or otherwise) indication of how widely the system is used (could be a couple of dozen people for all we are told).
  • Image:Valerie Sutton in 1985.jpg appears to be a copyright violation. Copyrighted text and images are not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the image is public domain. There is no indication that that is the case, and no OTRS from the photographer or the organisation releasing the image. There are ways to donate copyrighted text or images to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the text, isn't sufficient.

If you think you can fix the problems, I can sandbox the text for you to work on, let me know Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:30, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The image was not a reason for deletion, I was just making the point that it shouldn't be used.
"came to the attention of sign language researchers" is promotional if there is nothing to support to support the claim and these "researchers" are not identified. It's like me saying that several heads of state admire my work on Wikipedia. Vague and unsourced. Same with the other claims
She may well be notable, but none of the refs you have now produced were in the article. It's for the creator of the article to make sure it's properly sourced
I've already made the offer to userfy the article for you to improve, that still stands. If you can't see the problems or have a conflict of interest, you could, if you wish, alternatively post a request at Wikipedia:Requested articles for the article to be created. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 11:59, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just noticed all the archives at the top of the page, my apologies for talking as if you were a newbie or conflicted editor. I'll post the text here shortly. Usually I offer to check before it's reposted, but I'm sure that won't be required here. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:12, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An exciting month of wiki events![edit]

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5โ€“6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Your admin status[edit]

Hello. I'm a steward. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus recently. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on novwiki, where you are an administrator. Since that wiki does not have its own administrators' rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. See you at the Laurel Pool Room, 9th and Main Street, Laurel, MD on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 7:00 PM EST. See http://www.meetup.com/Wikimedia-DC/events/205494212/ for more information. Geraldshields11 (talk) 02:13, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon[edit]

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

Your administrator status on the Novial Wikipedia[edit]

Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on the wiki listed above. Since that wiki does not have its own rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights.

If you wish to resign your rights, you can reply here or request removal of your rights on Meta.

If there is no response at all after approximately one month, stewards will proceed to remove your administrator and/or bureaucrat rights. In ambiguous cases, stewards will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact the stewards.
