opening comment[edit]

I made the mega-casino link because they have a number of common properties not shared by regular casinos, and it was a reminder to get around to writing it up. Also the nighttime picture is from the east - a shot from the northeast would have Excalibur's rear towers appearing behind Liberty. Stan 05:05, 6 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I agree that it's not exactly from the northeast, but, judging from the angle of the "skyline," it seems to me to be not exactly due east, either. To make sure we're accurate, without using a phrase like "somewhat north of east," I've changed the caption to say that the photo was taken "from the Strip," which is certainly correct. (Wherever it's from, by the way, it's an excellent addition. It's much better to have a photo with the article, instead of just an external link.) As for the mega-casinos, there's no bright-line test as to what does or doesn't qualify. That would make a separate article problematic. (For example, some people would include the Stratosphere, some wouldn't.) The article on casino is pretty sketchy right now, and I'd say that a section on mega-casinos would fit better there. Anybody looking for basic information about casinos wouldn't know to search for "mega-casino" anyway. JamesMLane 05:27, 6 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I didn't notice the key bit of evidence before - the footbridge in the foreground is the one that runs straight east/west over LV Blvd on the north side of Tropicana, and it's on the righthand side of the picture, which means the picture is taken from slightly south of east. (I've been planning to take pictures myself, just been lazy about getting down there.) For mega-casinos, you're right, I'll add content to casino first before talking about splitting. The picture was taken going up the escalator on the north-east side of the corner - Tim

I just got rid of some pretty serious vandalism, the page was blanked out except for "Hi, hi hi hi hi hi" or somesuch nonsense Blahmicho 18:24, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

De-theming of New York, New York[edit]

Over the past year or so, construction has been going on to remove a lot of the New York theming inside of the casino (and possibly the hotel). Just like MGM Grand's Luxor has attempted to remove references to its original Egyptian theme, New York, New York is doing the same thing. While I'm not aware of any plans to modify the towers that look like NYC skyscrapers, the casino is currently being remodeled to remove a number of the New York icons that it once had -- some reference to that should be made in this article. Height[edit]

According to http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?buildingID=5381, the main building's height is 161.2 meters. I think it should be mentioned. 85.217.36.232 (talk) 03:17, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Statue of Liberty[edit]

Would it be appropriate for this article to mention that the USPS Forever stamp uses a picture of the Statue of Liberty from the Casino? Perhaphs in a trivia section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.176.31.126 (talk) 15:56, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is it true that the U.S. Postal Service has issued its newest first-class "forever" stamp featuring a stock photo of the head of the Statue of Liberty replica that stands in front of this casino?[1] If so, what is Wikimedia policy on "fair use" of same? --Pawyilee (talk) 12:17, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image usefulness[edit]

An image on this page is being disputed under NFCC#8. I would like to know if it's possible to fix the image data so it has the correct rational info. Thanks. VegasCasinoKid (talk) 13:44, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Fastily:I've updated the rationale. VegasCasinoKid (talk) 06:12, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a problem of fair use rationale; you didn't need to fix that. WP:NFCC#8 limits non-free file usage on Wikipedia to cases of contextual significance, such that a user's understanding of an article would be severely impacted by the omission of a non-free image. I believe that File:NYAppleCards.jpg and File:Tribal Cards.jpg do not meet this criterion -FASTILY 22:05, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Fastily: Now that we opened this discussion, I think we need to know what the purpose of the this criterion is. I actually took the image myself, but I assume the card images are owned by the casino so I tagged it as non-free. VegasCasinoKid (talk) 00:07, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you'd be correct about that. Here's a relevant passage. Regards, FASTILY 08:31, 13 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New York-New York Hotel Meant to Evoke 1940s NYC skyline?[edit]

"Its architecture is meant to evoke the New York City skyline of the 1940s era..."

Are there any sources for this claim? Clearly the New York-New York Hotel's facade incorporates a few replicas of skyscrapers that were built after the 1940s decade. For example, there's a replica of the AT&T/Sony Building at 550 Madison Avenue (which was built in 1984) on the back of the tower.

Other replicas of post-40s NYC skyscrapers include Lever House, Seagram Tower, 55 Water Street, and I guess One Liberty Plaza (the latter two were built around the same time as the original World Trade Center). This is according to a page on Grisel.net that lists the NY-NY skyscraper replicas that make up its facade (I believe there are about 13 of them). I haven't looked closely into the issue, but it sounds like a convincing enough reason to remove the unsourced claim about the 1940s era. Of course, it would be better to replace that with reliably sourced info about which buildings are represented in the facade, but those sources might not exist. (And it's also possible that the claim is true insofar as the architects meant to focus on the 1940s-era buildings, even if they mixed in some later specimens, but who knows.) Toohool (talk) 04:43, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Other than that, is the structure on the far left side realy depicting the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument? It may just as likely be depicting Grant's Tomb. The sources on this are solely secondary. 80.81.23.10 (talk) 14:09, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
