I came here looking for a definition about identifying a subsystem of a quantum system, as needed e.g. for syndrom extraction in quantum error codes (see quantum error correction, which i've seen linked to but doesn't seem to exist yet). See also quantum computer, i guess.

Sorry if this is not yet in a encyclopedia-like shape.
