Notes[edit]

Question: Wouldn't a better choice of wording of this template be to use "instead of" to replace "rather than"? The wording would then be:

To add an article to this category, use {Newstub} instead of stub.

gK ¿? 09:06, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Dunno, traditionally it has been written as "rather than." If you think it's much better as "instead of" go right ahead and change it. --AllyUnion (talk) 08:40, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Protection[edit]

This template has been protected from vandalism and any disruption from the pages it is currently being used on. Removing top level categories or editing the template may cause significant or disruptive changes to Category:Stub categories and should be avoided editing unless discussed here. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:49, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Oops. My intention was to get rid of the clutter in the main Category:Stub categories page with subcategories relating to specific geographical areas, which have their own parent Category:Stubs by region. I must've had a little slip of the brain. Sorry about that - maybe there's still a way of doing it (and similarly with other nested stub categories)? (Is it possible to do this by adding a parameter to this template, without breaking existing pages?) -- Smjg 18:45, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
No, there isn't a specific way to do that. The easiest way to do that is to make another template, and specify for regional stub categories only. Like Template:Regional stub category or something like that. -- AllyUnion (talk) 10:31, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Template:Regional stub category created. Invokes this template and adds Category:Stubs by region. (SEWilco 06:15, 21 July 2005 (UTC))[reply]

Change request[edit]

Please remove the link to Template:Stub. It doesn't add any value to this template, and just clutters Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Stub. -- Netoholic @ 14:17, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)

id=stub[edit]

Should id="stub" be added to the div tag? I noticed it being used in some stub references. (SEWilco 06:20, 21 July 2005 (UTC))[reply]

I thought that was just for actual stub messages. This message doesn't designate the category as a stub, it says that stubs are sorted into this category. --Joy [shallot] 11:26, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

µ for category sort key?[edit]

I notice that this template puts the stub category into it's parent subject category sorted under "µ". While this is fine, it's a little odd, and this page is where I'd expect to find an explanation for it. So, if anyone knows; please comment here. Thanks! JesseW, the juggling janitor 03:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

I was wondering about that myself. I've deleted it as making no sense. Blackcap (talk) 00:29, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I've reverted my edit, and contacted Grm wnr, who added it. My suspicion is that it exists to separate the stub cat from the rest for easy identification. Unless there's a good reason not to, I recommend changing to so that this cat is just as easy to find and is categorized just like everything else. I don't see a reason to have special rules for this 'un. Blackcap (talk) 01:57, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There was discussion of it over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting. The idea was to have something forcing it to the end of the list, to seperate it from the regular categories. --Mairi 02:25, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's helpful. O.K., keep as is, then. Best to read the full talk there, JesseW, but in brief, the reason is to force it to the bottom, and µ was chosen due to it being just about the last and it also meaning "very small." Blackcap (talk) 06:15, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What I haven't really figured out is why Category:United States keyboardist stubs shows up under the mu on Category:American keyboardists, but I've gone through over a hundred other musician sub cats and haven't seen another instance of this, e.g., Category:Drummer stubs doesn't show up as a sub cat of Category:Drummers. I assume this template isn't used on other stub-category pages, but I'd really love to see it implemented either fully, or not at all. B.Mearns*, KSC 21:31, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is because the Stub sorting is still a work in progress. Any stub that doesn't use this template yet, can be considered as not yet 100% verified by the WP:WSS I guess. - The DJ 07:45, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category inclusion[edit]

Should we be using including Category:Stub categories in all stub categories? That already has the "very large create subcategories" message on it... But there already are subcategories, we're simply also forcing them into the top-level category as well. Should we remove it from here, and re-add it manually to all the "top-level" stub categories? (Making those rather fewer in number, by adding additional parents, might not be a bad plan either.) Alai 19:27, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

how about using noinclude ? What does WP:WSS want to do with this template btw? I see there is not project boilerplate here yet - The DJ 04:10, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SVG icon[edit]

Can the template use an SVG version of the icon, perhaps ? — cBuckley (TalkContribs) 15:47, 8 February 2009 (UTC) editprotected[reply]

Please insert the SVG version, as described above. Thank you. --The Evil IP address (talk) 20:33, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request to fix spacing[edit]

Please see the code in the sandbox. It will correct the missing space before the "See", and add the break for the 2nd line too. Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 05:42, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

— Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:33, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The wording, the space, and the non-line-breaking features are fine. I'm wondering about the catsort, however, will it only include category pages in the Category:Stub categories with no stub tag? I see from the links that there are User and Template pgs that are incorrectly tagged with Template:Stub Category. I think there may need to be two stub cat maintenance cats: one for Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Tracker for stub categories with no stub tag, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Tracker for stub categories with no permcats. Is there a way to do this? --Funandtrvl (talk) 17:40, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply. I'll implement the code now. Two different categories (based on namespace) would be possible, but I'm not sure if it's necessary. Have a look and see what this looks like (when the category has populated). — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:31, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean about two different uses of this category. One way of dealing with this is by using different sort keys (P and S). What do you think about this? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:47, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the Category:Stub categories needing attention|S ... needs a namespace detect also, because the template and its subpages and 2 project pages are ending up in that category. I'm not sure if that will fix it, need help! --Funandtrvl (talk) 00:20, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, shall I restrict it to the category namespace? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:46, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that it should be restricted to the category namespace, because only categories should be in there. --Funandtrvl (talk) 16:15, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, done I think. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:23, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting[edit]

Anyone else seeing this cause categories to show up sorted as 'M' rather than 'µ'? Category:Business_software is where i first ran across it. The source code for the template looks like it prepends a 'µ', so not sure why this would be occurring.Cander0000 (talk) 05:55, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep. This has been the case for just short of three months. But it's not a 'M' (the Latin capital 'm'), but a character which looks the same as 'M' in some fonts - 'Μ', i.e. the Greek capital 'μ'. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting#Categorization of stub categories. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:58, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I should clarify for any scripters looking into this, the sort order is working properly (it's sorted where 'µ' should be), but what's displayed in the alphabetic index looks like a capital 'M'.Cander0000 (talk) 19:15, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really sorted where 'μ' should be, but sorted where its capital form 'Μ' should be. Prior to March this year, the headings on category pages fell into two groups: Latin letters had the small letters treated as if they were capital, so letters such as 'm', 'p' and 's' sorted under 'M', 'P', 'S' respectively, whereas small letters in other alphabets were not so treated, so (for example) the three letters 'μ', 'π', 'σ' and their capital versions 'Μ', 'Π', 'Σ' sorted into six distinct headings.
In March, the powers that be decided that in the interests of harmony, all alphabets should be treated in the same way that the Latin alphabet always had been, i.e. to have the headings capitalised and so merged, which means that we now have half the number of potential headings for non-Latin letters. It's just unfortunate that the Roman scribes chose to make their letter M look like the Greek letter Μ. This isn't the only case: the Cyrillic alphabet also has letters (such as м, п, с) whose capital forms (in these cases М, П, С) look like Latin capital letters (or Greek, or both), but again, they are different letters. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:06, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Replace nonsense sort-key sigma Σ that is for sum. Stubs are not sum or all articles; stubs can be sorted at exclamation !. --5.43.73.144 (talk) 12:48, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sigma does not just mean summation. jlwoodwa (talk) 04:35, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hidden[edit]

Hi! Maybe I miss some older discussions, but I cannot find them. So the question is the following. Shouldn't all stub categories be hidden? IMO they are not intended for readers, but more for editors in the same fashion as all other categories which list articles with some flaws. Correct me if I am wrong. --DixonD (talk) 12:23, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It has been discussed before, at least twice with my involvement: one of them was Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 April 6#Category:Stub categories although I don't recall where the other one(s) were - probably one of the village pumps, or a project page directly connected with stubs. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:28, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
