General[edit]

In my last edit (dated 4/3/05) I removed a section of text that was posted in the external links portion of this article. It may be useful information if it is able to be confirmed and if it is encorperated into a better section of the article. But currently it seems to be completley unwikified and dealt more with specific details within the comics than about the comic series itself. --Jake 20:49, Apr 3, 2005 (UTC)

Obviously the user who submited said info decided that it was still important and therefore decided to paste it haphazardly on the end of the article. Rather than just deleting what they posted again I instead moved the portion to the history section of the article and re-worded it drastically. I was able to find some confirmation on some of the material that they posted, but some of the info would require me to read specific issues of the comic (which I have not done). Hopefully that will work a little better, if anyone has read more recent issues of the commic and can posibly cite the comics within the article, That would really help to clarify what has been added. --Jake 04:49, Apr 4, 2005 (UTC)

I assume this is the place to start a discussion concerning this, generally I find it distracting to have both the english and american spellings of words present at the same time with parenthetical divisions. Perhaps if others agree someone could remove either part, leaving the american or english spelling alone in this article.

Somebody really needs to clean up the section about Spawns powers. It looks like its been written by a 12-year-old

what are you talking about!? I did the editing, but i made lots of mistakes, and people edited it for me. AKA Bold by correcting my mistakes, and basically you didn't edit that much >x<ino 10:40, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just completed a clean-up edit. The article reads more clearly, and with no unnecessary repetition. Linked mentions of the Spawn film to its individual page. Cybertooth85 19:52, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Tony Daniel not in the Artist List?

publishing status[edit]

very nice article, but i'd suggest improvements on the publishing issues: are the series still being published? how many comic books were published? and the manga? the animated series, how many episodes? etc. i came to the article looking for those informations.

It's still being published. Issue 159 is set to release at the end of the month. All of the other books are no longer in print. There are a few new trades coming out for the core title and Curse of the Spawn. Also, there's an Art of Greg Capullo book, the Spawn: Godslayer Miniseries, the Spawn: Architects of Fear oneshot (French, like Simony) and an Art of Spawn Book (which should entitle those with pre-orders to the Pewter Raven Spawn action figure). The Book of the Dead has officially been canceled.

I think we should make the Spawn Manga a new article. There's another volume set to come to America soon and the info on it is starting to overtake the page. I plan on making some changes to this soon. Avatar of chaos 21:29, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Necroplasm[edit]

Necroplasms- are green substances that can be found only in hell can also be found in humans. These are the substances that spawn needs to fight. His eyes that are green are compose of necroplasm's.If Spawn/Leetha uses too much Spawn will go back to hell. Also Spawn has 9999 necroplasm.

Story Arcs[edit]

when discussing each story arc, i think that the issues for each story arc should be cited. ie, the Armageddon story arc would be like..150-163 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.81.144.40 (talk) 21:50, August 26, 2007 (UTC)

I agree. I'd especially like to be able to tie a specific event with a specific issue, rather than just see a Spawn #150-163 citation. It will be especially useful for comic book collectors wanting to know in which issue a particular event or battle takes place (after all, this is a reference site).(72.144.191.22 (talk) 16:13, 27 January 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Characters section[edit]

I just did a major cleanup of the characters section. The grammar was very painful, there were numerous spelling mistakes, and what links had articles went to completely wrong articles.

Whoever edits that section next, please check what articles you link to. Don't just put link brackets around every character's name. Quite a few of the character names are common words, and thus link to unrelated articles.--Rosicrucian 05:58, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think God and Satan should be added to the characters section as current characters. There has been a lot of foreshadowing in the comics as of late to these characters having appearances (for example, there was mention of Satan in issue 153). Also, God appeared in the comic previously, disguised as an old lady named Mary. Also, Overtkill and Tremor are missing from the characters section. -- Dragnilar 00:06, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weaknesses[edit]

I believe the section on Spawn's weaknesses leaves out a couple factoids. First and foremost, it should be mentioned that Spawn also can be killed if he is decapitated (occurred around issue 35 I believe, when he fought Tiffany, and also when he was torn apart in issue 150 by the Disciple.) Also, prior to what I think was issue 100*, Spawn's powers were finite and if he were to have them depleted, he would automatically 'die' and be sent back to Hell (where he would then waste away until Armageddon.) Finlay, many can probably vouch for the fact that Spawn is definitely weak against 'holy' powered weaponry (examples being Angela's lance from the earlier issues of Spawn, The Redeemer's powers, Spawn's run-in with God** and most recently Spawn's fight with The Disciple***.)

- I can't remember EXACTLY when Spawn's powers no longer became finite. It was either after he killed his former master Malebolgia in issue 100 or after he went back to Hell and had himself sent back to Earth as a human prior to issue 150. **Spawn's counter disappeared in the 70's. His power has never been confirmed as infinite, the lack of a counter is what has led to that belief. Solicitations for an upcoming issue state that his counter is about to reach zero. - Avi**

- Some could probably argue Spawn's little run-in with God in about issue 32ish was not a loss on Spawn's part due to just Holy powers. Although one would assume that all of God's powers are "Holy", I suppose someone else could say they are of a different kind of element. In addition, all God did to Spawn was turn his powers 'off' when it looked like Spawn was about to kill God. This still showed a very obvious weakness on Spawn's part if you ask me.

- While Spawn's recent run-in with The Disciple was a loss mainly because of the fact Spawn was in the Deadzone, it can be assumed that The Disciple is loaded with the same kind of holy powers that the likes of Angela and The Redeemer possess. -- Dragnilar 23:57, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have picked up spawn volume 1, and it seems he is unable to revert to his normal form, instead getting turned into a white "beach bum". Shall it be included, and should i put a picture up for it? Jackpot Den 00:38, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Spawn can only die by decapitation if it is either a weapon from Hell or Heaven, in issue 68 his head is removed by bum John leekley and a couple of his friends but spawn comes back good as knew thanks to his powers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SpiritofShadow (talkcontribs) 18:14, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about having the powers of Hell and still having to use a gun? Seems like a weakness on the writer side. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.184.215.210 (talk) 04:34, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Man of Miracles[edit]

The notion that the "Man of Miracles" is a retcon of Cogalistro is somewhat of speculation on the part of the fans. Neither David Hine nor anyone else at TMP have actually come out and said that MoM is a retcon, and there is even speculation now that MoM may be something else. For example, there is some speculation on the Spawn.com forums that he is Jesus Christ. I think that the notation that MoM is a retcon should be taken off until further evidence has come out to support the idea.--Dragnilar 00:03, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I understand it, the notion that the "Man of Miracles" is a retcon of Cog stems from the fact that the Spawn story in the Image hardcover was originally going to be a story with Cog in it, but due to the legal dispute with Gaiman it was changed to a new character.
Of course, the legality of MoM himself is questionable, given his uncanny resemblance to the disputed character Miracleman, who was also the subject of legal action by Gaiman.--Rosicrucian 15:29, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • For those of you who do not know me, I am Avatar_of_Chaos from the Spawn.com board. I can confirm that Man of Miracles is not a retcon of Cog. All of Cog's actions remain intact, and he is acknowledged, though not by name, as the king of Hell who has locked himself in the Black Tower. From conversations with McFarlane staffers I can clearly say that Man of Miracles was originally supposed to be Miracleman and was supposed to inherit the role of mentor and sage left vacant when Cog betrayed Al. Due to legal reasons, mainly that Todd had no claim to any rights regarding Miracleman and the rest of the world initially thought, Man of Miracles was created instead and they were forced to retcon his depiction in the Image Hardcover since it was finished 2 years before it was released. I have altered Cog's page at this time and clarified this point, as well as removed the references to the retcon. --Avi

Appearances in Other Media[edit]

  • Raven from Teen Titans (2003) cape turns alive and pulls in a villain much like spawn's chains. They share a nightmarish effect on their victims. Her eyes turnes glowing red and her smile resembles Spawns'. (1st. season: episode 6 - 'Nevermore')

I have removed this passage, as Raven has had these same powers in the Teen Titans comics for years before Spawn was ever published. As such, it is not relevant to the article.--Rosicrucian 02:13, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar fix required[edit]

"However, if the three of them should appear in the future in the American comic, then it is likely that they (and any future Hellspawn intended to appear in future volumes of the translated Manga) likely never returend to Earth again after being pulled back to Hell."

Needs a bit of a cleanup - typos, repetition of the 'likely', etc. The rest of the Shadows of Spawn needs a bit of cleaning, but the article is pretty good so far. Cheers, Noble Kale 00:05, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Popularity[edit]

I'm not sure what User:BakerBaker was thinking while editing this section. While the rift in the art team seems noteworthy enough to include, the rest of it was so heavily PoV that for now I've just reverted the section. If anyone can come up with a revision that can keep the factual content he added while avoiding the editorializing, feel free.--Rosicrucian 14:32, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lance Gueck[edit]

Until Lance Gueck proves that he has co-ownership rights to Spawn he should not be mentioned as co-creator. The difference between Gueck and Gaiman is that Gaiman is acknowledged by law and Gueck's claims have neither been verified or pursued legally. A separate sub-section should be allocated where Gueck is concerned just as it is for the Gaiman v. McFarlane legal issues.

Soul series tag[edit]

I understand that Spawn was in Soul Calibur II but does the {{Soul series}} template at the bottom of the article really add anything? It seems unnecessary and a very small part of Spawn. I think a "See also" link would be better suited if that. Morphh 00:00, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Kingdom arc?[edit]

How come there is no info from the kingdom arc? Simon Pure's cult had several comics devoted to them and probably just as much screen time as Ab and Zab. It could also be a good starting point to talk about the (increasingly muddled) cosmology in Spawn. (As in, heaven employs vampires as its footsoldiers on Earth, then talking about other servants of heaven, how angels are made...) I know that the Kingdom arc is not liked by the fans of the comic, but come on...

List of comics?[edit]

It would be nice to have lists of comics from the main series (date of publication, etc.), as well as something about the universe and spin-offs. I have collected some data from my books:

  • Spawn Volume #1 (US) aka Spawn:Creation (UK 1997): collects issues 1-5,
  • Spawn Volume #2 aka Spawn:Evolution (UK 1997): 6-9, 11
  • Spawn Volume #3 aka Spawn:Revelations (UK 1997): 12-15
  • Spawn Volume #4 aka Spawn:Escalation (UK 1997): 16-20

  • Spawn:Transformation (UK 1998): 31-36
  • Spawn:Abduction (UK 1998): 37-42
  • Spawn:Sanction (UK 1998): 43-48
  • Spawn:Damnation (UK 1999): 49-53
  • Spawn:Corruption (UK 1999): 54-58
  • Spawn:Devastation (UK 2000): 59-64
  • Spawn:Termination (UK 2000):65-70
  • Spawn:Resurrection (UK 2001): 71-76

  • Spawn:Bloodfeud (UK 1999): collects Spawn:Bloodfeud 1-4, and prelude from Spawn 36

Al Simmons is an Activist for McFarlane Toys. Does anyone know the similarity between him and the name of Spawn? Is there any Trivia? Perhaps Spawn was given the name Al Simmons because of him? or just a coincidence? --70.111.218.254 02:00, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article too big and unfocused[edit]

I think this article needs some work, not that it's bad, but it's just trying to cover too much at once. I think it should be split up into an article based on the character Spawn and an article about the series. That would break apart this current article nicely, since it kind of fluctuates back and forth between the character and the comic itself.

Anyone have any opinions on this? --Drewcifer3000 09:11, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you're going give to that much backstory, then the fictional history should be broken out.

Honestly, it just needs to be cut down. Look at some of the other characters (Superman and Spider-man are great examples.) These characters have publishing histories of decades. Heck Superman is fast approaching a century. Spawn article is alomost as big as his! Either cut down on the retelling of every Spawn comic book storyline, movie and cartoon or break them off seperately. I think if you break them off and see how empty they look, you can put them back together in a better format. Oh and lose the bolded first paragraph.--Art8641 20:31, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that might be a good solution. That and organize the page a bit better in terms of real world stuff and in-story stuff. It kind of jumps around alot.Drewcifer3000 02:22, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, would it be possible to cite in which specific issues certain events happen? It will make it easier for those wishing to read about a certain event, and it might improve organization. This seems to be a problem with a lot of the comic book entries on Wikipedia, although some do cite specific issues when mentioning key events.(72.144.183.218 19:27, 9 May 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Bravo[edit]

I stopped reading comics (and thusly Spawn) nearly a decade ago and found the detailed historical synopses to be most informative and interesting. Thanks to all who've contributed thus far! Just one thing... the spoiler seems to give everything a definitive end, leading one to wonder... if the comic is still in print, what is it about? Citation/Hommages/References[edit]

A scene from the Freaks (1932) film, The Wedding Feast (can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQkYGhmdMig), is cited in Spam, the "We accept you, one of us!". Now, I have just finished reading from #1 to #167, and unfortunately I don't quite remember where is that, I just remember it's a couple of boxes, one of them is a drawing of a midget dancing on top of a long table, and everyone in the table is singing "one of us". I will try looking it up again. But anyway, I suppose more citations/hommages can be found in the series, it would be nice to gather them here then create a section for that in the article.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 201.17.50.185 (talk) 02:26, 13 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Article cleanup To Do:[edit]

In an attempt to cleanup this article, I'd like to propose the following changes:

  • Reorganize article to more clearly differentiate between character and publication. Merge Fictional character biography, Powers, Weaknesses, and Appearance into one large section. Merge Characters, Creative teams, Appearances in other media, Popularity, and Legal dispute into one large section.
  • Add references throughout, mostly using Template:Comic book reference.
  • Add Spinoffs section, which would include the The Adventures of Spawn section as well as the numerous other spinoffs.
  • Heavily reduce the Fictional character biography section.
  • Heavily reduce the Powers section.
  • Reduce and reorganize Characters section. Explanations of each character are unnecessary, especially the linked ones. Seperate sections for Current characters, Other characters, and Deceased are unnecessary - the later section is a spoiler by nature.
  • Expand Legal Dispute section to include the suit by Tony Twist.
  • Add the quintessential Spawn logo to the infobox.
  • Cleanup the External links section.
  • Cleanup some language problems
  • As I have said above, I would like to heavily reduce a number of sections, which will in turn shrink the size of the page significantly. As per Wikipedia:Article size, the article as it is right now is far too long, and as per Wikipedia:Article size#Splitting an article, should be split into separate articles. Depending on how the reductions go, it may still be necessary to split it up, but we'll cross the bridge when we come to it.

I would like to accomplish all of this, though not necessarily in that order. This will obviously take me a while, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Along these lines, I've only read the Spawn series to around issue #100, so my knowledge might be somewhat incomplete. Also, comments, concerns, or additions to the propositions above are also welcome. Drewcifer3000 09:21, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the old characters are returning, and reappearing in the comic book at the moment, so it may be good to place them in one section. (NewDreams2 18:13, 18 July 2007 (UTC))[reply]

I've placed a Nyx article linked to this page to better expand on her current role in the Spawn comic book, since her recent appearance in issue 169. From some information I gather, she may still be playing a crucial role in the Spawn issues to come. I don't have all the relevant information from her past appearances nor the skills to add pictures links and etc, so I really need help. To those who can, kindly expand on it. Thanks.

Major edits[edit]

This article has been tagged for years regarding some considerable problems that have plagued its length as well as its focus. Per Wikipedia protocol I took the initiative to "be bold" and removed much of the fat from the fictional character biography section. I know the amount of material removed was large but it had to be done, and I do expect some strong reactions to my changes. The enthusiasm and diligent work that went into the Melville-esque size of the section is admirable but ultimately not fitting the tone of how an encyclopedia should present information. The length that I have adjusted it to, while not perfect, serves better the purpose of a synopsis- a summary of concise length. It can be tricky to edit comic book-related entries on Wikipedia since the fandom of a series can make editors fiercely possessive of their given character and the article concerning them. I am confident, though, that in order to assume the proper tone of a Wikipedia entry the spirit of collaboration will be given the chance it deserves to make the entry more encyclopedic as opposed to exhaustively detailed.

There were several ideas for how to better adjust the article such as giving the series a separate plot outline page, which I am not against. No one solution seemed to be gaining much traction, though. I'll continue to edit the article to better shape its content and do appreciate any feedback. say anybob 21:43, 28 May 2012 (UTC) (talk)

However, everything that happens to him post-resurrection (killing Malbolgia, becoming a god and stopping Armageddon, becoming Omega Spawn, etc.) is now omitted. Assessment comment[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Spawn (character)/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Initial B-Class rating:
  • Complete lack of references and sources
  • Glut of content. Most of it is good, but all of it could be down-sized and/or reduced heavily.
  • Fictional character biography is way too long
  • Poor language at times
  • Disorganized (no clear distinction between fictional and real-world sections)
  • Poor formatting at times (Characters section for example)

Spawn[edit]

spawn is not a superhero. None of the information over his biogrpahy or sources claim he is a superhero. He is included in antihero lists 46.70.163.71 (talk) 01:54, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Spawn hero or antihero[edit]

Spawn isn't a hero that's what this very same depiction of his biography states . You cannot write one thing in depiction and other thing in very same article that contradict. Biography clearly states him to be an antihero. Sources from internet claim as well. I can't put references because I don't know how technically but you can search it up for proof.

I can't out links here because Wikipedia tells to shorten i can't find proper way to do it as well. Garbage markup[edit]

Maybe it isn't important for the wiki markup to make structural sense or for the resulting HTML output not be total mess but just in case any of few the people who understand the markup actually care, I want to note that the list markup in this article is total garbage. The resulting HTML markup consists of many very short lists with only one or two items in them. (See Help:List.)

Editors might want to consider reorganizing the page into more meaningful paragraphs (WP:PROSE) or actual lists. -- 109.78.196.114 (talk) 17:37, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
