VfD and other nonsense

Yes, I'm intermittently active on the VfD page. Today, for example, I ran across somebody who felt compelled to create a half dozen pages (4 articles, 2 redirects) about nonnotable local groups and people. They are all now up for deletion in the proper places. Ah well.

Otherwise, I was a bit hesitant about the AMERAH article. Perhaps it would have been better to have that as the title, and the longer one as a redirect or somesuch... nobody really seems to be much interested in it, though (because the robots all lost so badly, I suppose), so it's not a matter of pressing importance.

• I had actually created a redirect from AMERAH to your article earlier today, and I think it is proper procedure to do it the way you have- full name becomes article title and abbrevs become redirs. And hey, I'm interested! I bet there's a few people out there even nerdier than me that like the idea of man-made muscles beating men er well beating woman i guess...Halidecyphon 21:42, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Actually, the rule of thumb, I believe, is to use the most common name for the main article, with others as redirects--e.g., United States, rather than United States of America, is the main article. In this case, I'm not at all sure which might be "most common," though googling for the full name vs. AMERAH + robot (because apperently Amerah is also an Arabic name or something) seems to return marginally more (42 vs. "About 20") for the latter. Nomination of "camera diet" for speedy deletion

You marked "camera diet" for speedy deletion. It doesn't seem to fall under any of the criteria for speedy deletion; could you please explain? Please follow these guidelines when nominating articles for speedy deletion, and post the notice on top of the article rather than blanking the text and replacing it with the notice. • My sincerest apologies. I guess I'd seen too many a vandal-posted page in a row and my brain gave up trying to understand this one. I thought I was acting in accordance with the patent nonsense semi-policy, specifically the words "replace it with a link to Wikipedia:Speedy deletions" under the heading "Dealing with Patent Nonsense". Of course, even if this was truly patent nonsense, it is now clear to me that I should have followed the speedy policy which I had read once long ago and should have reviewed before I started speedying things instead of VfDing them after I got fed up with it taking days to delete pages full of random characters or obscenities. Thankyou for bringing my error to my attention, I will mend my ways (I've decided it's bad practice to patrol the recent changes page at 1 or 2am anyway :-p). --Halidecyphon 08:54, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Regarding Altruism

About the altruism on your profile - surely you mean reciprocal altruism (which, if you think about it, isnt really altruistic at all is it?)--Lyeta 00:00, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

• Hmm, maybe it is reciprocal altruism, but the fact that there is no punishment for "cheaters" in Wikipedia (people that use the information without submitting anything) makes it seem more along the lines of indirect reciprocity (see altruism). You made me realize that a major motivation (although I hate to admit it) to post on wikipedia is in pursuit of reputation. Now, perhaps someone should write that article on indirect reciprocity. It ain't gonna be me, because as I've just proven so eloquently, I really don't know much about it at all!--Halidecyphon 10:48, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words. However I don't know that "reward" is the right word for an increase in responsibility. "Burden?" Anyway, it's nice to be recognized as a member of the community who can be trusted to make positive contributions to the project. After 10,000 edits it would be a bit embarassing not to be an admin. However, a fair word of warning .. I entered this page, because I saw you wanted to delete a valueble entry. On general deletion: Why delete stuff anyhow? If it isn't harmfull, it might prove usefull. We all know that you cannot keep any encyclopia 100% correct. • Hello! It's great to have someone to discuss this with. I take issue with the idea that "stuff," in general, belongs in an encyclopedia. Accurate, encyclopedic stuff does. This is the consensus on wikipedia (see various policy and proposed policy pages such as Wikipedia:Five_Pillars,Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Importance). There are several reasons for deleting "stuff," even when it "might prove useful" and I am prepared to discuss those. Which "valu[a]ble entry," specifically, would you like to discuss? I agree that no reference is "100% correct," but your argument is clearly a fallacy; because a city will never be 100% safe, should we not fight crime? cut-the-knot

Changing my vote to no vote per SciAm award just added to the article. It now could be seen as satisfying WP:WEB, although personally I do not believe the spirit of that guidline is to copy every tech magazine's annual "best of the web" to wikipedia. - Halidecyphon 16:54, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Re: Backslash-apostrophe inserting IPs

They are generally caused by some misconfiguration in the proxy in question. Yes, the backslashes are escaped characters, in many different computer languages. A misconfigured proxy is/can be/may be 'open', in the sense of WP:OP, so that basically anyone from anywhere can use it at any time and be untraceable. That causes problems on Wikipedia because it allows vandals to attack and retreat, be untraceable and unblockable. Vast quantities of vandalism enter through open proxies. Thus backslashes => probably compromised (open) proxy => high probability of extensive vandalism => block. To 'fix' it, well, you'd have to fix the proxy, basically, or encourage the editor to find a different route to your wiki. A bot to fix backslashes, I don't know off the top of my head, but a good place to ask would be WP:BOTREQ. Hope that helps, Splash - tk 22:07, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
